credited in the Military Lands Account with the value of the

area relinquished for the construction of the road.

According to the plan above referred to

this area is 81,693 square feet or 1.87 acres and I am advised

that in view of the fact that heavy expenditure will have to be

incurred on the site and that a considerable portion of it will

be occupied by the slope of the cutting, 20 cents per square

foot or a total of $18,888.60, say $16,840 for the whole area

would be a fair rate at which to effect the transaction.

5. Your Excellency will no doubt agree that

the improvement of this important communication within the line

of the defences is of strategic advantage and I shall be obliged

if I can be informed that Your Excellency is prepared to recom-

-commend to the War Office the acceptance of the conditions for

the proposed alteration to the road to Shaukiwan as embodied in

this letter.
